Major Calgary Thoroughfare Gets Green Light for Final Phase

Premier Rachel Notley made the announcement, flanked by Mayor Naheed Nenshi and provincial transportation minister Brian Mason, in downtown Calgary on Thursday morning.

Construction of the final leg — the West Calgary Ring Road — is scheduled to begin in 2019. It’ll link the under-construction Southwest Calgary Ring Road and the existing Northwest Stoney Trail.

The West Calgary Ring Road will run around 9 kilometres along Calgary’s west side, between Highway 8 and the Trans-Canada Highway, according to a government statement. Once finished, the CRR is expected to stretch 101 kilometres around the city.

Planning began on the CRR in the 1970s, but the Alberta government purchased most of the land needed for the project in the 1980s and 1990s.

At the moment, about 70 kilometres of the CRR is open to traffic.
